Sophia Gao is a Chinese-Canadian contemporary artist whose work reimagines classical Chinese aesthetics through a distinctly poetic and modern lens. A graduate of the prestigious Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, she descends from a revered lineage of artists—including Qing Dynasty grandmaster Xu Ye Fen and her grandfather Xu Zhi-Xiong, a noted painter and scholar of literati traditions.
Trained rigorously in the disciplines of Chinese landscape and bird-and-flower painting, Gao’s practice is rooted in brushwork, symbolism, and meditative composition. Her paintings do not merely reference nature—they become contemplative spaces in which the ephemeral and eternal quietly coexist.
Now based in Toronto, Gao has exhibited internationally, with works represented by leading galleries and held in major private collections across Canada, the United States, and China. Her canvases are known for their lyrical restraint, chromatic harmony, and emotional clarity. In fusing refined traditional techniques with the fluidity of contemporary expression, Gao offers viewers not just visual beauty, but a moment of stillness, reflection, and renewal.
